Spring had just begun when I was driving along Route 9 from Izumo toward Matsue.

As the road follows the shore of Lake Shinji, there is a place where many people stop to watch the sunset.
Shinji Fureai Park.
Not far from Tamatsukuri Onsen, the park sits quietly beside the lake, offering a place to pause and watch the changing light.

On the way, I passed a giant magatama monument, the symbol of nearby Tamatsukuri Onsen.
As a child, I often wondered what that large curved shape was whenever we drove past it.

Only later did I learn that it represented the ancient magatama beads that have long been associated with this region.
Shinji Fureai Park
After arriving, I parked the car and began to walk through the park.
The fresh green of early spring felt almost luminous.

There are restrooms, vending machines, and plenty of open space, making it an easy place to stop during a drive around Lake Shinji.

I noticed benches painted with illustrations of the birds that live around the lake.
One of them featured a mallard duck with an unexpectedly charming expression.

Climbing a small hill, I found a field covered with white clover.
I lay down on the grass and looked up at the sky.
The colors slowly shifted from pale orange to deeper shades of evening.
There was no need to hurry.
The sky changed almost imperceptibly, one moment at a time.

As I walked back down toward the lakeshore, the sun began to sink into Lake Shinji.
The reflection of the sunset spread across the water, mixing with the shadows of the waves.
The surface of the lake gradually darkened, and the boundary between water and sky became less clear.
I stood there quietly, watching.
Then an airplane appeared in the distance.

It was descending toward Izumo Enmusubi Airport, flying directly into the evening light.
At that moment, I realized that we were all experiencing the same sunset in different ways.
For me, the day was ending.
I had spent the day traveling through Izumo, and this quiet moment by the lake felt like an epilogue.
But for the people on that airplane, it was different.
Their journey was just beginning.
What felt like an ending to me was a beginning for someone else.
For a brief moment above the waters of Lake Shinji, beginnings and endings quietly crossed paths.
