Tamatsukuri Onsen is one of the oldest hot spring towns in Japan, with a history of more than 1,300 years.
The name “Tamatsukuri” refers to the crafting of magatama, curved beads that were once made in this area. These beads are deeply connected to ancient Japanese mythology and are even associated with one of the Imperial Regalia.
In ancient times, artisans lived here, shaping stones such as agate into sacred objects. The town developed as a place closely tied to the spiritual culture surrounding Izumo Taisha, one of Japan’s most important shrines.
Even today, along the shores of Lake Shinji near the entrance to the onsen town, a large magatama monument quietly tells the story of this land.
A place of wishes and quiet prayers
At the center of Tamatsukuri Onsen stands Tamatsukuri Yu Shrine.

Within its grounds is a sacred stone known as the “Wishing Stone.” Visitors receive a small stone and gently touch it to the sacred one, believing that their wishes may come true.
This quiet ritual reflects the spiritual atmosphere of Izumo, where myths and everyday life are still closely connected.
A hot spring for beauty and healing
Tamatsukuri Onsen has long been known as a “beauty bath.”
Ancient records describe how people gathered here to enjoy the waters, seeking both health and beauty. Even today, some visitors take the hot spring water with them and use it as a natural skin lotion.

The town is also pleasant to walk through, with footbaths and paths along the river. Some ryokan offer yukata rentals, allowing visitors to stroll through the onsen town in traditional attire.
